How to reach the hotel
Reception of the Hotel
Reception is staffed from seven in the morning until eleven at night, every day of the year. The duty manager takes calls in person; out of hours, the night porter holds the line until first light. There is no automated menu and no answering service — a ring through is a ring through.

The duty manager reads the morning post in the library, between breakfast and the day’s first arrivals. A reply, if one is needed, is hand-written and put in the afternoon collection at the lane’s end.

Finding the lane
By road
From the A684, take the lane signed Wythern Beck two miles east of Aysgarth; the lane climbs through beech wood for about a mile and a half. The hotel is on the right at the head of the climb, where the lane opens onto the cobbled forecourt. Sat-nav devices set to the postcode will bring you to the lane head; the last quarter mile is single-track, with passing places at the third and seventh gate.
By rail
Northallerton is the nearest mainline station, served by trains from London King’s Cross via York and from Edinburgh via Newcastle. We can arrange a car for the forty-minute drive to the hotel; please ring reception with your train and time at least the morning before. There is no charge for the arrangement; the driver is one of the foreman’s sons and will know you by name.
Arriving at the hotel
The forecourt is cobbled, sets back from Old Quarry Lane behind a stand of beech, and holds sixteen cars without crowding. Parking is free for guests of the hotel and for visitors of the library and fell garden. Coach drop-offs are taken at the south gate by arrangement; the duty manager asks for twelve hours’ notice so that the gate can be unlocked and a foreman sent to the corner. There is no valet service. Bags are taken from the car by the night porter, or by the duty manager in the morning service.
If you are travelling with a working dog, the kennel attached to the south gate is yours for the duration of your stay; please ring ahead so that fresh straw is laid.
